Bookcase
Yesterday, while walking home from a meeting with the Conservation System Foundation, I finally found the hollow core door that I have been waiting for, which I used to solve the complete lack of bookcases in my new office.
Since Carrie would not abide any more junk brought home and stored, I had to finish the project before she got home from work, and she was even planning on coming home early since she was sick. Luckily it took me less than two hours from finding the door to finishing painting.
I love building things out of hollow core, since it combines many of the best features of wood and cardboard. It has a great strength to weight ratio, which makes it easy to carry the doors home and move when the furniture is completed. It are easy to cut through, even if you just have a hand saw (though it splinters a bit along the cut), and the finished product is about as durable as a piece of low-end Ikea furniture.
If anyone finds any other nice looking doors, please let me know!
ed with a hollow core door that was 24" by 79".
ardware pieces was really cruddy, so I just trashed them.
the door into four sections, two for the shelves and two for the sides. Cutting it in half down the middle gave me a 1' depth, and my target height of 28 inches dictated where to make the other cut.
embled it using brackets below the shelves. Since many of the screws just go through the thin outer layer it is not super strong, but should hold up to daily use if I am careful.
ing hides most of the blemishes.
inished bookcase!
